South Barrie’s transformation combines two growth districts, Hewitt’s and Salem, with major road, sewer and community-facility projects. A useful comparison starts with each home’s servicing phase and the delivery of everyday amenities. [3] [6]
Planning picture Mixed: established planning framework, separate subdivision phases and infrastructure under construction
This guide uses South Barrie for the combined Hewitt’s and Salem growth districts shown separately in the City’s 2023 area maps. Salem is the western district associated with the McKay Road/Veterans Drive corridor; Hewitt’s is the eastern district around Yonge Street, Mapleview Drive East and Lockhart Road. The polygons are irregular: use Schedules D and E for orientation and current City mapping for a particular parcel. [2]

Hewitt’s and Salem remain useful geographic labels in municipal servicing and capital documents. They describe a broader growth programme than one builder’s release: roads, sewers, individual subdivisions and civic facilities advance through different projects. [3]
South Barrie is also the name of a builder community at McKay Road and Veterans Drive, presented by Aspen Ridge, CountryWide, Regal Crest and Remington. Its official site currently invites registration for singles and towns. That marketing community should not be treated as the whole Salem district, nor as all growth in southern Barrie. [8]
The builder group promotes future schools, parks, shopping and employment. Those are part of its community vision; this guide does not convert them into confirmed opening dates, school assignments, named employers or currently operating services. [8]
Huronia Road works are in progress. The project combines road widening, drainage and culvert work, turtle fencing where required, intersection improvements, a trunk sanitary sewer and watermain infrastructure. These are enabling works for development, not merely a road resurfacing programme. [4]
On September 25, 2026, the City moved the expected reopening of the Huronia/Lockhart intersection from September 30 to early November 2026 because of utility conflicts. For a home visit or move, recheck the active detour notice; the overall project estimate remains spring 2028. [4]
Hewitt’s has a separate longer-term dependency. The 2026 operating-budget document describes Project 1540, a pumping station and twin forcemains south of Mapleview and west of 20th Sideroad. It forecasts design completion in June 2027 and construction beginning in 2033, while noting a developer request to advance delivery. These are the document’s forecasts, not confirmed service dates for every subdivision. [5]
The 2026 capital programme identifies McKay Road widening and trunk services west of Highway 400, alongside Yonge Street widening between Mapleview and Lockhart with a multi-use trail and sidewalks. A capital-programme entry identifies intended work; it does not establish that a road is open. [3]
The South Barrie builder site describes a future McKay Road Highway 400 exit. A future interchange should not be used as an existing route or a commute-time guarantee. Compare the routes actually available at the expected occupancy date. [8]
Council endorsed one regional recreation centre and library to serve both Salem and Hewitt’s on June 18, 2025. Its direction included investigating shared amenities and allowing outdoor sports fields potentially to be delivered before the indoor facility. Council also asked that cricket and soccer fields be considered separately. [6]
The 2026 operating financial overview identifies a planned parkland-reserve draw for the site purchase. That is a financing step, not proof the complex is open. This draft does not assign a completion date to the facility. [7]
Verify current land-use mapping, overlays and the actual lot’s subdivision and servicing conditions. The Official Plan requires its policies and maps to be read together. [1]
A future target is a forecast. It is not a promised completion or move-in date.
The City’s development-charge by-law includes separate Salem and Hewitt’s area maps, useful for understanding the historic district geography. [2]
Council chose a single regional recreation and library concept serving both growth areas. [6]
The consolidated planning document reviewed carries this date. [1]
The City revised expected intersection reopening to early November 2026 because of utility conflicts. [4]
The 2026 operating budget anticipates design completion in June 2027; this is not a confirmed construction completion milestone. [5]
No. This area guide covers Hewitt’s and Salem. A separate four-builder community also uses the South Barrie name at McKay Road and Veterans Drive. [2] [8]
No. Huronia works remain in progress, and the shared recreation complex is a planned project. Verify the facilities and access needed for your specific occupancy date. [4] [6]
No. The 298,000 figure covers the entire City of Barrie, including existing residents and other growth locations. [1]
